Roselyn Musaruwa is a 2019 finalist in the WE Empower UN SDG Challenge from Zimbabwe and a pioneer in South Africa’s cleaning industry. WE Empower Intern Jacqueline Blisse elaborates on how Roselyn’s business does much more than help keep communities clean.
Roselyn Musaruwa is the director of Surdax Investments, a company that provides multiservice solutions in Southern Africa. These services include cleaning, landscaping, pest control and many other services that guarantee the improvement of any environment.
Musaruwa and her company support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of No Poverty, Gender Equality, and Decent Work and Economic Growth. Her company is working to empower communities through the eradication of poverty, supporting the community and providing training, and will continue to make immense changes in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa for years to come.
In support of goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, Surdax Investments has taken the opportunity to grow the economy by expanding the business to offer more goods and services.
Surdax supports SDG 1: No Poverty through providing decent entry-level jobs for a large community. In addition to this, they also train prospective employees before they are hired so there isn’t discrimination based on education levels. In addition, Musaruwa and Surdax Investments have shown their support of SDG 5: Gender Equality through growing the percentage of women employed in their company from 20% to 47%. This is a statistic that they believe still needs to increase in the coming years. Musaruwa has given support towards the women already working for Surdax by offering training that helps with self-esteem and motivation. This stemmed from Musaruwa opening up the floor to suggestions about women’s issues.
“It is important for any country to make sure that poverty is eradicated by opening up opportunities for its citizens through employment creation,” Musaruwa said. “Our current economic and political environment is not allowing for this dream to be a reality, this is why we have taken it upon ourselves to create sustainable employment.”
